How Did BINGO Get Its Start?
By Craig Crossland
One of the most entertaining games on earth is Bingo. You can play it at your home, but it is usually played in halls. In fact, there are substantial Bingo payouts to be had. However, different areas offer various Bingo rewards. The local Bingo brochure will help everyone from the novice to the seasoned pro understand their specific guidelines and payouts. But where did this Bingo obsession come from? Most of us are familiar with the game today, but how did it start? Bingo, originally known as “Beano” inside the United States, was changed to its name today by Edwin Lowe when the game integrated all over the world. Edwin Lowe was quickly assisted by Carl Leffler, a math university lecturer, who helped to create over 10,000 Bingo cards. If you look at the actual origin of Bingo, the first person to have invented the game was Lo Giuco De Lotto. He was an Italian born in the 1500’s. It was Edwin Lowe of the United States who later changed the name to “Bingo” and altered the rules to make the game a bit more entertaining. It’s interesting to ponder that a simple parlor game is now one of the most popular card games and played by millions of people all over the world. A standard Bingo Card is a simple diagram of 24 places with one “free” place. Each square is assigned an arbitrary letter and number and is arranged in 5 columns and 5 rows. At a Bingo hall, players purchase at least one playing card with random letters and numbers that make up the word “B-I-N-G-O.” Figures include the call letters “B-2” and “O-68” and are drawn randomly until one participant reaches “BINGO!” For example a row or column with 5 marks in a horizontal, vertical or even diagonal position on a single playing card will win the game, and the purse. There are many possible arrangements that allow one to win at Bingo. Specific details of the game include the column amounts. The amounts from column B are from one to 15, inside column I they range from 16 to 30, column N has only four numbered squares that range from 31 to 45 with one freebie square, column G holds from 46 to 60, and inside column O is found 61 to 75. When choosing their playing card, players have 1000s of cards to choose. Some manufacturer’s print non-duplicated collections of over thousand cards and others offer nine thousand readily available playing cards. If you’ve never played Bingo, you should give it a try. It’s easy to mark out “called” squares with the dabber, and once you feel the thrill of first calling “BINGO,” you may just be hooked. All you have to do is understand the rules, listen carefully and remember to collect your prize once you reach the coveted “BINGO.” |
